RJ Eskow has a blog post on HuffPost today titled “Where Have America’s Wages Gone?” I like the post, and love the links he includes. I don’t think we can write, talk, or debate this topic enough.
In the blog Eskow states;
“It will take a grassroots uprising to redirect the thinking of the “centrist” Democrats toward economic equality. Why pick on these Democrats? Because Republicans are a lost cause. The Republican Party platform of 1956 boasted of union growth and Social Security expansion under President Eisenhower. But that party is long gone and there’s little likelihood it will ever return. Democrats can be pressured by their base, with its preponderance of working people. Republicans who primarily rely on billionaire and/or Tea Party support are largely insulated from that kind of pressure (although there may be some opportunities for populist grassroots alliances).”
I think I understand where Eskow is coming from, but I am so weary of political polarization that I would really prefer to picket with fast food workers and get more low wage earners to join in. I am sure MANY fast food worker voted Republican. I know my forklift driving father and customer service rep mother did. We all care more about our families than we do our political affiliation. I can’t always, or ever, agree with my Tea Party friends about politics, but we always agree about wanting safety, health, and happiness for our family and friends.
