A big shout out to Xpress‘ head tech/information savant, Keith Beardmore, for this post.

According to Keith, companies like Verizon stop upgrading operating systems on our mobile devices about 6 months before our contract ends so we’ll get a new device when the old one actually works just fine. This is incredibly frustrating to someone like me, and likely to many others. Rather than leaving us feeling totally totally trapped by our mobile provider CyanogenMod has created a way that we can upgrade operating systems and keep using our current device.

Keith would want me to talk about things like open source and other tech things, I can’t do that with any authority. I don’t understand what’s behind the tech, just what it does. I do, however, understand wireless carriers forcing us to upgrade before we care to do so.  I love that CyanogenMod is helping to get us out of an obsolescence trap.

Thanks for lighting a candle, CyanogenMod. Keep it burning.
